Choosing the alternator is simple.  I feel that sticking with good heavy duty older alternators produces satisfactory results.  Get an externally regulated 100+ amp alternator and stick with a common type ie. Leece,  Prestolite, Chrysler, etc...  The brushes should be externally accessable so you can apply power directly to them.  I like Leece Nevilles for this and also for the ability to tap into 3 phase from the outside.  A good 160 amp small case Leece (Prestolite) can be had for 50.00 on Ebay.
